Editorial Review for Spiced Pear – by Lee Nash
The Scene
The Gilded Age is very much alive at this elegant restaurant housed in the former Chanler mansion (1873). Now a boutique hotel, the ornate French-Empire style manor still impresses with high ceilings and crystal chandelier. The restaurant continues this sense of grandeur with an antique fireplace, a parquet floor and virtually every table commanding a view of the ocean. Even the gleaming custom-designed French show kitchen radiates Old World glamour.
The Food
French, Asian, and American twists color the menu. A tweaked staple like lobster mac and cheese is actually orzo rice mixed with a flavorful lobster stock, chunks of ham and aged cheeses. Kobe beef, usually an entree, is served as a short rib appetizer. The menu changes daily, but recent entrees like spiced squab served on a green onion and corn pancake, and rosefish with ginger soy butter indicate the thoughtful approach that typifies the cooking.

It was our Anniversary and we decided to do a beautiful dinner at the Spiced Pear. We had been looking forward to it for a while. We go out fine dining quite a bit and we didn't think that this place would disappoint. The atmosphere is great- we went on a Friday night for the fantastic jazz in the veranda room. We had drinks and apps there first before retiring to the dining room for dinner a while later. In the veranda room we had spotty service, and a beet salad and a few oysters, which we didn't think would be the best our meal was to get. After listening to jazz for a few hours we headed to the dining room and ordered a nice bottle of wine. I had a foie gras appetizer which was breaded and deep fried with what tasted like maple syrup on it and a super sweet cherry foam which had no semblense to the dish, it was terrible. My husband's escargot was fairly decent but too salty for my taste. For dinner I had a Sunfish which would have been great- but it was beyond salty and my husband who actually loves salt couldn't even eat it. The biggest disappointment to the meal was my husband's $75 Kobe Beef Ribeye. Ribeye steak is usually marbelized with fat which gives the flavor, but not completey covered with fat. There was barely any meat. I cannot believe that a chef at a place like this would feel good about serving a piece of meat like this. You could get a better steak at a chain restaurant. Also the balsamic reduction was not reduced enough, making it runny and entirely too acidic. Our wine was the best part of the meal. I would go back to this place for the veranda food only (pizzas and burgers), but I wouldn't expect much but a great view.
Pros: beautiful view
Cons: food does not match with the high end place.

The food and service were outstanding! Gorgeous setting, views. Very upscale. Can't wait to go back. We went during the week for dinner and loved it. The terrace is a great spot for drinks on a warm summer night.
Pros: service, ambience, very luxurious
Cons: expensive
