Charleston Battery and White Point Gardens

Editorial Review for Charleston Battery and White Point Gardens – by Florrie Byrd

The Background
White Point Gardens, also known as the Battery, sits at the southernmost point of the Charleston peninsula, where the Cooper and Ashley Rivers let out into the Atlantic Ocean. Originally opened in 1837 as a public park, the Battery was fortified during the Civil War to protect the city against Union troops. Kids will love climbing on the disabled Civil War-era cannons that still stand along the edges of the park.

The Appeal
Tourists and locals seem to agree that the Battery is the city's best spot for strolling. Maybe it's the live oaks drooping with Spanish moss, the pleasant ocean breezes, or the lovely views of Charleston Harbor. The Battery is also home to some of the city's most lavish residences, including the historic Edmonston-Alston house, the Calhoun Mansion and the Palmer Home (also known as the Pink Palace).

I wonderful place to stroll and just look at the beauty of the homes and flowers, etc. I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent walking by the water and taking photos of the mansions! I'd recommend that no one visiting Charleston miss it.
