Overview
The 26 miles of federally protected lands provide a destination for nature lovers, families, groups of friends and individuals seeking solitude. The public parks can be reached by driving to parking lots at the east or west ends of Fire Island. The interior of the island, where Watch Hill Campground and the Sunken Forest lie, is accessible by ferry and water taxi only. The entire island is made up of 17 individual communities (some strictly private) and is almost entirely car-free.
Services
Several visitor centers offer advice, ranger-led tours and educational programs. Most activities on the island center around the beautiful beaches, peaceful dunes and the waters of the ocean and bay. You can enjoy backpacking, bird watching, boating, camping, fishing, hiking, hunting, interpretive programs, kayaking, nature walks, snorkeling, stargazing, swimming and wildlife viewing.
