Editorial Review for The Breakers – by Citysearch Staff
In Short
The Breakers, completed in 1895, was built by architect Richard Morris Hunt for railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt II. A collaboration between these two leading figures in American industry and art, the Breakers is reminiscent of the 16th-century palaces of Genoa. The mansion, which has 70 rooms (nearly half for servants), incorporates rare marbles, mosaics, frescoes, gilt bronze, sculpture and elaborate plaster work. Entire rooms were constructed by craftsmen in Europe, then shipped to Newport and reassembled.
